Deer hunting was tough this past season! With all the rain that South Texas experienced in 2015 (our ranch had about 40 inches) the deer just didn’t move as much as in years past. They didn’t have to. Some weekends we had trouble finding does.
During our wounded warrior hunt in November we were unable to locate mature deer for the veterans. In the 5 years we’ve hosted the hunt, we have always had exceptional luck and we were greatly disappointed to see them go home without some horns. We did keep them busy with does, hogs, javalina and a bobcat.
It seemed like just after the rut in mid to late January we started to see some of our best deer, and connected with several 150 class deer and one 162 that is our ranch’s best to date.
The quail numbers this past season were very good, and with some luck we may be headed for another great season with some timely rains.
Dove hunting was also exceptional around some of our waterholes in September.
